Valentine’s Day, India past and present

valentines day

History the past – The Valentine’s Day is observed on the memory of Saint Valentines. The concept is totally western and it began to achieve heights around the end of medieval ages. Now a day in modern age it is prospers like a festival. Due to the establishment of British Raj in India and spreading of English literature and Christianity a English learned middle class come into exists. They began to follow the European culture and hate the Native culture. The Brahma samaj members are the first to use the Valentine’s Day to present the card to the girl and say “Do you be my Valentine?” and it all started.

Present – After the initial stages the businessman and the media came into action. They produce large numbers of Greeting Cards and give publicity through media and it appears like that if you do not present Greeting Cards to your girl friend then you don’t love her. The sentiment of the young blood arises and so on.

Now the sentiment is over. The youngsters use this day as a Bahana to make party and have a intimate time with the mates. There is a proverb in Hindi   “pine balo ko pine ka bahana chahiye”. This is like that. The sentiment behind the occasion is now disappears and the physical things takes over.

Indian context – Now the question is why the needs arise? Aren’t there any Indian equivalent of this exists? The answer is so many. In Wikipedia you may find Kamdeva and Rati as the representative. But my point is in Indian culture Love and Sex are precisely distinguished. The eternal love story of Krishna – Radha, Ram – Sita, Laila – Majnu, Heer – Ranjha are never being compared. Why can’t we use the “Holi” for such type of confessions or proposals? Because we don’t love ourselves.

Definitely if I don’t touch the Bangalore happenings then it will be incomplete. My question is that Is it correct to do the dam things on the name of love, on the name of Valentine’s day? From the footage of the video the whole world had seen the dressings and condition of the ladies. Will anyone allow his on offspring of minor age to watch such stupid things in public place? It is very easy to say yes, but difficult to do.

Off course the proper authority is there but then why revolutions happen. Over drinking, immoral activities are in increase in the name of occasion. Indian women are valued for their lovely nature as a mother, wife, sister, lover, and daughter. Not for mere a partner of man. While the western world is appreciating our culture following our traditions we ourselves ditched them.

Message - The love between mankind is eternal let it be eastern or western. The message of love is to be spread across. Valentine’s day is such occasion. It gives the weak hearted lovers enough strength to open out their heart. It creates a atmosphere of fearlessness and friendly environment.

Needless to say in this age of globalization nothing is our culture or their culture. The culture of humanity, love is the world culture. Men are always in the haunt for finding a new way to express their love to the dear lady love. This day of 14th February give them the opportunity to do that. So make good use of it.
